Happy Monday, Phase One!
Phase One will be continuing to explore addition and subtraction during our maths lessons.
Year One’s will be looking at strategies on how they can count on or add numbers within 20. Can they explain their methods and show a friend or adult? We will be also delving into solving word problems and practicing learning the days of the weeks and months of the year.
Take a look at this picture and see if you can talk about it together at home. Can your child explain the equation to you? Can they create some more equations? Feel free to use objects to demonstrate this or ask them to write it down, using the whole and part model which is featured below. If so, please upload onto Tapestry, we would love to see them – Golden tickets for any uploaded or sent directly into Mrs Chambers. (kchambers@st-pauls.gloucs.sch.uk)

Also, in the Nest (maths classroom) pupils will be working on number formation, numeral recognition, counting on from any given number within 20 and careful touch counting. We will also be focusing on speaking in full sentences.
Take a look at our star words and discuss them together. Can your child explain or show you how to use them in a sentence? Perhaps, give them some objects (anything you have at home, spoons, pencils, legos, dolls, action figures, etc) and see if they can be counted, grouped, sorted or used to create maths equations – don’t forget to use our Star Words.

For example ‘First there are 7 cars, then 3 drive away, now I have 4.’ or ‘First I have 9 lego bricks, then zero are taken away, now I have 9 lego bricks.’ Or ’10 takeaway 5 is equal to 5.’ We would love to see your maths learning, don’t forget to upload onto Tapestry or email in.
I cannot wait to see your wonderful maths!
