Exploring perimeter

Today in Year 4 we started our new unit, looking at perimeter and area. We discussed that perimeter is the total of the boundary of a shape and that we need to add up each measurement to find the correct perimeter. We then explored creating our own shapes in chalk and measuring these with our meter sticks. The children did very well and showcased a great understanding of perimeter!

Secondary School Time Tables

This week, Year 6 continued to look at Time tables and more specifically this week at their Year 7 time tables. The children explored the different codes on the time tables and learnt about how most schools run on a two week time table. The children then created their own questions and asked the class a question about the time table and the children had to use their skills of skimming and scanning alongside statistic knowledge to read the time tables accurately.

Measurement

Today in Year 4 we continued our learning on converting measurements. The children used their prior knowledge on converting between metres and centimetres and converting between litres and millilitres to help us to convert between kilograms and grams. We then discussed what equivalent measurements were and how we can recognised these. The children spent the remainder of the lesson working in pairs to match equivalent measurements together.

Estimating

Today in Group 4 we looked at estimating the length, mass and capacity of different objects. We discussed how we can make sensible estimations as we know that we would not measure the Eiffel Tower in millimetres. We then estimated the weight and length of different classroom objects such as pencils, rulers, books, dictionaries and pencil cases. We then measured and weighed these objects to see if our estimations were correct. The children did very well and made some excellent estimations.
