Line Graphs

In Maths, Year 5 have been learning about data, line graphs and timetables. Today the children used a line graph to convert kilograms into pounds. The children identified how they need to go along the x- axis to the correct number, before going up until they reach the line on the chart. They can then go along to the y- axis to find the number. The children used their kindles to research the weight of different objects, before converting the weight from kilograms to pounds using the line graph.

Exploring 3D shapes

This week in Group 4 we have been exploring 3D shapes. We have looked at how to describe the properties of 3D shapes such as their faces and edges. We have also looked at comparing and categorising different 3D shapes. Today Group 4 looked at making different 3D shapes out of smaller 3D cubes and describing these to their tables. They did excellently. Well done for the great work this term!

Capacity and Volume

Year 3 had an active maths lesson today learning to read scales on measuring containers. They worked in teams to explore ways of finding the capacity of a large bowl using a variety of measuring jugs and cylinders. The teams had to record the volume of water they were pouring into the bowls and calculate how much they had added in total. They learned that millilitres and litres are the units of measure we use for capacity and volume.

Ask your Year 3 pupil to define capacity and volume. You will find the answers below these great pictures of the pupils using practical resources to support their learning.

Capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold and volume is
how much liquid is in the container.

Exploring 3D shapes

Today in Year 4 we started to explore 3D shapes. We discussed that 3D means a shape is three dimensional and discussed how we might talk about the different properties of the shapes. We discussed vertices, edges and faces and looked at how we would count these. The children then went to their tables and explored how to do this together.

Combien de minutes?

In French this week Westgate have used their knowledge of French numbers to calculate time differences. They began the lesson by recapping telling the time and then learned how to count in fives in French using a matching game before moving on to solving some maths time problems. They practised using the very useful phrase “il y a”. [there is/are]

Symmetry

Today in Year 4 we continued our learning on symmetry. The children were excellent and could also draw an accurate line of symmetry of varying shapes. We then worked together as a class to draw the remainder of a shape when we were only provided with the line of symmetry. We worked out that by counting the squares we could ensure we were accurate and it made it easier for us! The children did really well and then drew the remainder of some letters with a line of symmetry.

Home Learning – Wednesday 15th May 2024

This Wednesday afternoon we would like you to complete some of the following tasks.
When you complete a task from the list below, you should upload it to your portfolio on your dojo account or you can bring in anything completed on paper into school tomorrow.

Reading:
Can I remind parents and children that we expect three signatures a week from parents in your child’s reading record to show that children have read at home either to a parent, a sibling or independently.

Book Review
If you have read a good book recently and you’d like to recommend it to others, write a book review which we can share with the rest of Westgate.

Maths:
Year 5 are learning about fractions, decimals and percentages, please use the following link to support your learning: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/znjqtfr/articles/zrkw2fr#z26cjfr
Please use TTRS to practice your times tables: https://www.ttrockstars.com/login

Managing Information Online
Discuss the following questions with an adult or older sibling at home:

  • If something is popular online, does it mean it must be true? Why/Why not?
  • If something is popular online, does it mean it must be false?
  • Why/Why not?
  • Who creates the information we may see online?
  • Can we think of any examples of inaccurate or untrue information being shared online?
  • What reasons could someone have for sharing information that is inaccurate or untrue?
  • What is the difference between mis-information and dis-information?
  • If lots of people share inaccurate or untrue information, what could happen?
  • How could we help to prevent the sharing of inaccurate or untrue information?

Music
Year 6 to practise their songs for their Leaver’s service at the Cathedral on the 13th June:

Our Value – Trust:
Think about a time where you have been trusted, how did you feel? Think about a time when you trusted someone, why did you trust them? What qualities does a person need in order to be trusted? Create a poster or leaflet about how to be a trustworthy person.

Science – Electricity:
Think about every time you use electricity when you go home today. Write a diary every time you use electricity and bring it in to show the rest of the class tomorrow. How could we reduce the amount of electricity we use?

Thank you for your cooperation,
Miss Taylor and Miss Southam

Line Graphs

Year 5 have started a new unit in Maths called ‘line graphs and timetables’. Today we explored what a line graph is, what data it can represent and what it can tell us. The pupils looked at different line graphs and matched the statements to them, based on what was being shown.
