Group 2 get dOughy

Today in Maths we linked our learning to our wider curriculum, we have designed our own pizza and will make these later on this week.

We weighed, measured and mixed our ingredients to make the dough. we used weighing scales to weigh the flour in grams and a measuring jug to measure the warm water in millilitres. We then timed the dough and left it to rise at a set temperature using a thermometer, a different scale.

This week, in Maths.

This week in Maths, Reception pupils will be focusing on securing their knowledge of the numbers 1,2 and 3. We shall be playing games with these numbers, writing them and matching the correct quantities. Try working on these numbers together at home, you can count the steps to the kitchen or how many pairs of shoes you have, you could count the toys that are on the floor, or spot the door numbers in your street.

Watch this number formation video and see if you can remember the songs and try practicing writing numbers, you don’t have to even use a pencil for this – you could use anything you can find, a paintbrush and water or chalk, outside. Please feel free to take some photos and upload onto Tapestry for us to see, we would love to see all the different ways you can create or form your numbers.

Next, try and see if you can match the quantities to the numbers. Can you find 3 things that are blue and place them next to the matching number? Can you find 2 forks and place them next to the correct number? See the examples below and look at all the different ways to think and think about numbers, go on and try some, and most importantly, have fun!

Group 2 get adding

Today was our first lesson in Phase 2 thinking about adding a two digit number to a one digit number, and even two 2digit numbers together to find the total. We thought about the different words for add, we came up with, total, adding, together, part + part = whole, more, altogether, whole. Lots of ways to say add!

We used dienes to first partition numbers into tens and ones, we then set it out on a place value chart and found the total. We worked hard to move from dienes to drawing the tens and ones, can you spot our hard work?

Maths, this week.

Hello and welcome to another great week which begins with our Maths Monday blog. This week in Phase One we shall be focusing on patterns, particularly patterns which repeat and also Shapes, 3D and 2D.

Take a look at this picture and see which shapes you can spot? What can you see? Ask your child to explain in full sentences, what are the shapes, colours and how many can they find?

Reception children will be exploring patterns and noticing if and how they repeat. You can help at home, maybe you can make patterns using everyday objects and see if they can continue the pattern, spoon, knife, fork, spoon, knife, fork for example. Take a look at this video and see if you can complete the pattern together.

Year One pupils will be investigating shapes and their properties. Can you spot any in your homes? What shapes are the plates? How do you know? How many sides do they have? Are they 3D or 2D?
