Reasoning Group 2

Today we were looking at ways to quickly add 3 one digit numbers. We discussed finding near doubles or doubles, number bonds to ten, or swapping some of the ones to make numbers we could easily add in our heads.

Listen to this quick way of finding the total and remember part + part + part = whole!

Maths this week

This week in Maths we have been working in pairs to play a Maths game and see how great we are at listening to each other.

Pupils had to give their friend a number, then they had to find the same amount of objects to match the numeral. This was not only fun but a great activity which can be followed up at home. You could hide numbers around the house and see if your child can say the number and then find the correct quantities to match. Once tricky element which proved hard to us all was remembering to speak in a full sentence. Some children were able to say ‘Here is number 5 and there are 5 bears here’.

As we secure these skills we will be moving onto addition and subtraction over the net few weeks, again, this is something that can be done together at home as a family. In class, we have enjoyed playing snakes and ladders, maybe you have this game or something similar at home? Don’t forget to take photos and upload onto Tapestry for us to enjoy!

MATHS PEER PALS

Today saw some pupils in Phase 3, take the opportunity to help each other – Working as peer teachers. Several of the phase team set about supporting friends with their learning, all about subtraction. Often seeing how your peers approach the learning, can really help with developing understanding: we learn so much in the world, from each other.

Who could you help learn something new, today?

DO YOU KNOW EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SUBTRACTION?

Well done to everyone in the peer learning group – Excellent learning!

A MAJESTIC MATHS MATCH

The end of our half-term, saw Phase 3 take the opportunity to be involved in a competitive Maths Match. The competition was fierce and the thinking intense.

The scores built and built, along with the excitement – Who was going to win?

Can you solve the question below? Give it a go!

EXPLAINING IT REALLY ADDS VALUE.

Addition has been the focus, this last week, in maths – We took the time to stop and explain it too!

Knowing what to do is great, but explaining how you do something, step-by-step, can really add value to your understanding.

Take time to ask your child how they solve something in maths and see if they can apply their skills in different contexts.

Above, you can see the pupils agreeing on the steps to complete a typical piece of addition – which they did really well. WELL DONE Mr. Flower’s and Mrs. Goode’s Maths classes!

PEER TEACHING ADDS UP!

In Phase 3, we are always looking for ways to help each other with our learning – Here you can see some peer teaching in maths: helping one another to fully understand written mathematical methods, for addition. Both the learner and the teacher gain from the experience and everyone made some excellent progress here, too.

WELL DONE PEER TEACHERS AND LEARNERS!

COULD YOU EXPLAIN COLUMN ADDITION OR ANOTHER MATHEMATICAL MODEL, TO SOMEONE ELSE?
