Christmas Extravaganza Enterprise!

Next week we have our Christmas Extravaganza! You are welcome to join us in the hall to explore the stalls, cakes, tea, santa’s grotto and much more!

In preparation for this, the children have taken part in an enterprise. We were set a budget to buy resources and then make something to be sold at the fayre. The children have worked so hard creating the products and signs to tell people what we have for sale.

Next week we will look at the money we have made and use subtraction to find out our profit.

Please come and support us in raising the most money through our sales! We look forward to seeing you at such an exciting event 🙂

This week we have looked at different diets and how not everyone needs the same nutrition if they have a different lifestyle or job. Continue this work at home by creating breakfast, lunch, tea, snacks and drinks for either a celebrity or an occupation of your choice.

Value – Generosity
How can someone show generosity without expecting the same in return? Think back to Monday’s assembly and sometimes it’s the act of giving that makes us feel good rather than receiving. Write about a time that you’ve been generous and it made you feel happy.

Internet Safety – Online Relationships
This term Westgate Phase are learning about relationships online. This week we have been exploring respect for others as well as self-respect online. Create a DO’S/DON’TS list for supporting friends online – e.g. DO listen to their feelings, DON’T make it worse by being mean to whoever upset them.

D.T. – Diet, Nutrition and Hygiene.
This week in D.T. we have learnt about the eat-well plate and balanced diets. Think about the meals you have had so far this week. Can you identify which food groups each food is in? What carbohydrates, proteins, fibres and fats have you eaten this week so far? Make a list of the foods you have eaten and put them into the different food groups.

Geography – Natural Resources
This week we have been learning about where natural resources occur in the world and what this means for that country’s economic growth, Saudi Arabia and oil for example. A lot of the resources we learnt about were from South America and the Middle East. Research what natural resources come from countries in Europe.

Science – Animals, including Humans.
This week we are learning about body parts and how humans have evolved over time. Imagine we are in the year 4023… Will humans be taller? Will our hands be bigger or smaller? Why? Think about how technology is advancing and draw a picture of what humans might be like in 2000 years time.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Miss Taylor and Miss Southam

Group 4 Algorithms

Computing is a subject that is changing quickly as new technologies develop. However, the under lying principles do not change. One of these is the use of algorithms.

Initially, group 4 had no idea as to what an algorithm is but quickly realised it is an instruction.

Technically, it is a set of instructions for solving a problem or accomplishing a task. We use them in our everyday life from following a recipe to make a cake to traffic lights. Algorithms are everywhere!

In groups, the children created their own map. It had to have a start and an end which the groups then made an algorithm for in order to move around the map. Creating the maps was great fun and having squares on the paper made it easier to create the algorithm. When writing the algorithm we realised that the maths vocabulary came in handy – clockwise, anti-clockwise, left, right, 90 degree turn.

AN EGGXTRAORDINARY EXPERIMENT

This week we began with an Eggxtraordinary experiment – to support our science studies.

The pupils spent some time exploring the properties of materials, with the brief that they needed to protect an important package: an egg in full flight.

Pupils were provided with a selection of materials, with different properties and then considered which samples would be best at protecting a raw egg, from a fall. The pupils made their hypothesis and of course we had to give it a go.

Fair testing procedures were applied and the result were analysed. Ask them all about it and take a look at the pictures and video shown above.

CAN YOU NAME THE PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS?

WHY DO WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT PACKAGING IS BEST FOR PARCELS?

Take a look at the video below, too (which the pupils watched), to find out more about materials and their properties.
