Maths in Phase One

This week our thoughts and learning are all on measurement!

Reception will be starting to understand what measurement means and the language that we use. The key words this week will be:

full empty nearly full nearly empty half full

Reception will then look at understanding how to weigh objects and the language that is used, for example:

heavy light heavier lighter heaviest lightest balance

Year One’s will be concentrating on measuring time. They will be seeing how many repetitive activities they can do in a set time and understanding the difference of seconds and minutes. They will also be recapping weighing and concentrating of the language of weight measurement – grams and kilograms.

Percentage Reasons

Earlier this week, Mr. Flower’s maths class, set about reasoning with percentages, equipped with their new knowledge on how to find percentages of values. Working in small groups, the pupils explained how they had reached their answers, to a series of questions – writing down the steps they had taken.

They were reminded, that whilst the answer was needed, the greater priority was knowing how they found it – What strategy did they use. We then explored the different strategies that had been deployed across the class.

Try answering the questions below and be ready to explain how you solved them.

Calligrams Shared

Today, Phase 3 continued their learning all about Calligrams – Do you know what they are; can you guess from the images below?

Today, in two class groups, we took a moment to create some shared poetry, all about maths – before we write some individual calligrams, later this week.

We started with words banks for maths and the all important emotive language, that we would need to build our poems around. Then we made a start. After that, we considered the ‘topic-related’ shapes we’d like to create with the words of our poems.

Take a look at the final calligrams and the poems that helped form them – below.

Estimate, Calculate, Measure

Today, we took maths outside so that we could investigate measurement. We took turns to visit different measurement ‘stations’, where we estimated weights, lengths and capacities, then calculated and measured them. We reinforced our knowledge of metric conversion and applied our multiplication and fraction skills.

Group 3 maths 23.6.21

Today we were learning about correspondance and working logically. We tried several different ways to see how many combinations of outfit we could make. We noticed the multiplication we needed too! Next, we moved on to adding another hat and working out that multiplication too. Great work today!

Word of the week- Dice.

This week during our maths lessons we have been using dice in a variety of ways.

We worked in pairs using a dice during a board game, similar to snakes and ladders. Pupils were able to take turns to move their counter along the board. Each child rolled the dice and then recognised the number shown to move along the board. This involved lots of careful counting and remembering to stop on the same number shown on the dice. All of the pupils throughly enjoyed this activity and have asked for a tricker board game.

Do you have any board games at home? Have you played any board games recently? Maybe you can try some at home together?

We then used a dice with dots instead of numbers. When the dice was rolled around the circle we had to tell a friend the number the dice had landed on, then tell another friend one number more than and one number less than. We also rolled the dice and had to say after each roll if it was a greater or lesser number than before. “We rolled a 5 last time, we rolled 6 now. 5 is 1 less than 6”. TBW

We also enjoyed singing the songs “10 green bottles” and “5 little men in a flying saucer”. Maybe you could sing these together as a family? I’d love to see your photos on Tapestry showing you and your child having some maths dice fun at home too.

Phase One Maths

This week Reception are carrying on working on their depth of numbers up to 20. We will be playing a version of Snakes and Ladders called Waterspouts and Spiders Silk. This will really help us with our counting and the understanding of taking turns and looking out to see who is going to win.

Year One pupils will continue with their learning of measurement and this week we are looking at how to measure with a ruler and understand the language of measuring the difference between two objects.

Why not have a go at the game below – it will help you with your measurement language! https://www.topmarks.co.uk/early-years/lets-compare

Our Maths word of the week has been – Formation.

This week during Maths we have worked on careful counting, by slowly counting objects and images then rechecking the quantities. Our main focus has been to correctly form our numbers, this was through continuous provision and adult led activities. Pupils have been showing great progress with these important skills and appear more motivated to work independently.

Below is a handy clip to share with your child as it features helpful songs to sing whilst writing numbers. Maybe you can look at this together and practice writing numbers with pencils, pens, chalks outside, play doh or even try messy play with cooked spaghetti, flour, rice or shaving foam. We would love to see any photos shared on Tapestry.
