In class today, Eastgate Group 1 have begun looking at measuring. They have been comparing sizes and using new vocabulary such as ‘taller than’, ‘longer than’ and ‘shorter than’.

This week we have been practising counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We have explored arrays that display the multiplications and writing equations to explain them. Some children have been using cubes to display the information, creating equal groups of 2, 5 or 10, then counting in the correct number to know how many altogether.
We have used the sentences:
I can see ___ groups, with equal totals of ___. The whole is ___.
Can you explain this array using these sentences?
This week we have started a new unit in maths. We have been exploring multiplication facts and what these look like when they are represented . The children have shown great expertise and knowledge already!

In year 2, we are beginning to learn the times tables. Why not have a go at counting in 2s, 10s and 5s. Once they can do this, the children can begin to say the times tables too, eg. 1×2=2 2×2=4. Can the children see any patterns in the numbers? Counting in twos starting on 0 will always be an even number. Counting in tens from 10 will always end in a 0 and counting in fives the answer will always end in 5 or 0.

This week in maths our focus has been time graphs. Yesterday Group 4 learnt how to read and interpret the data provides on a time graph and today we put that knowledge into practice to create our own. The children have really progressed during this unit and it is excellent to see their enthusiasm for this topic. Well done Group 4!

This week Group 4 have started a new unit on graphs and data. At times we have struggled with this but we have really upped our skills today learning all about the X and Y axis and how to construct a bar chart ourselves. This unit has seen the children make great progress so far and each child is continuing to push themselves to make their work more challenging. What a great first week group 4!
This week, Group 3 have been learning how to interpret and present data in different ways. Today they collected data using a tally and put their information on a bar chart.

Non-standard measure. What is that? You can measure length using rulers and tape measures but, before this, people used things such as hands! Did you know, horses are still measured in hands? To start us off, we had a selection of items we could use to measure with. It was agreed that this was not very reliable. So, out came the metre rulers and we had to work together to find things that were a metre long or tall / less than and more than a metre.
Finding things smaller and longer than a metre was much easier than finding things that were exactly 1 metre.

This week we looked at subtraction and addition using bar models. To start with the children struggled with this as they had become very efficient using the column method, However, the class showed great skills of perseverance and completed some very complex word problems at the end of the week using this method. Keep working hard Group 4 and lets continue this positivity next term!
Today in Maths Group 4 continued with their column subtraction with 4-digit integers. We have made great improvements as a class and we are improving our skills daily. The children have trialled multiple techniques for subtraction and are showing a wealth of knowledge as we the near the end of the unit. Well done Group 4!
