Seconds become minutes

LO: To be able to understand that time can be measured in minutes and seconds.

Star words

Second       minute       hour        clock   longer        shorter    Minute hand  second hand

Did you know a minute has 60 seconds in it?

Today we had 20 seconds to time our friend doing different activities. We had to count how many times they did the following things: Star jumps, write our name, write number to 10, catch a ball. This was great fun after a few false starts. It always pays to listen!

After, we had to guess how long a minute was it was a disaster! Some of us put our hands down after 30 seconds while others went over 2 minutes! Something we can be working on!

Shape detectives.

This week the badgers, learning group have been exploring, identifying and investigating 2D and 3D shapes. We have been looking at shape features in order to identify them. We have been sorting them by colour, size, if they are curved or straight, 3 or 4 sided as well as sorting into 2D and 3D groups.

Super outside learning!

We explored and created our own repeating 2 and 3 step shape patterns. At first, we found this tricky but after moving our learning outside and moving shapes as well our bodies we were able to start creating and following some very challenging patterns.

A ‘This goes, triangle, circle, square, triangle, circle, square.’

J ‘It does the same, triangle, triangle, circle, circle, triangle, triangle.’

We continued our detective work by walking around school and trying to find as many different 2D and 3D shapes as possible. We took photos of the ones we found as well as drawing them onto clipboards.

‘This fire thing is a cylinder shape’ R

J ‘Mr Flowers Door is a rectangle, the plug is a 2D square, the radiator is a like a rectangle but its 3D. I think it is a cuboid’.

‘Wow! The bin in the playground is a cylinder, it is 3D!’

Can you see all the different shapes that we found?

As you can see some some ,the brilliant badgers have really worked hard to deepen their maths knowledge.

Can you find more shapes in and around your homes? What shapes can you find? Are they 3D or 2D? How many faces or sides do they have? Don’t forget to take a photo and upload onto Tapestry. Happy shape hunting!

Let’s Keep Learning (LKL) – Weekly Overview (W/C 21/03/22)

This week, we will concentrate our learning on perfecting our production of ‘Around the World in A Thousand Years’, so that we are word and action ready for Tuesday 29th March.

We will also refresh our knowledge of the Christian period of Lent through our Guided Reading lessons, and remind ourselves of word classes and grammar rules in Literacy.

In maths, we will spend time re-familiarising ourselves with arithmetic and reasoning problems around the four key operators: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

You can also access the overview for the whole of the spring term by clicking here.

Don’t forget TO CONTINUE TO PRACTISE YOUR LINES FOR THE PERFORMANCE.

Times Tables

Who said that times tables are hard?

They were wrong! Today in group 3, we learnt to say our eight times tables using a counting stick. In our pairs, we had a script to follow as we helped our partner to remember where the numbers went along the stick.

We had to double some numbers, triple others, remember a key and the number our partner kept forgetting. Once we had all the numbers on the counting stick our partner began removing them and seeing if we could remember what was missing.

Everyone had great fun learnt a lot!

Maths this week

This week during our maths lessons, Phase One will be exploring all the ways in which we can measure.

We shall be looking at how we can measure the length of something, including estimating when comparing against another object. Try comparing when at home together; which is the tallest out of the table or the chair? Guess how many spoons you may need, to see how long your teddy is? We will be looking capacities and weights, using weighing scales to see if they will balance if objects are the same or different.

Again, you can try this home, guess which will be heavier out of a tin of beans and an apple? Which is lighter when looking at a toothbrush and the toothpaste?

Upload your pictures onto Tapestry so can see what you can have found and how you have been measuring at home.

Here are some pictures below, see if you can use the language of ’empty, full, nearly full, or nearly empty’ when describing each image.

Which picture appears empty or full?
How would you describe each image?

Lastly, why not find out how long you are? Lie on the floor and see if you are 8 shoes long or possibly 10 forks long, maybe you are more or less than 8? Do you have a grown-up that is longer than 10 books in length? Make sure to capture this by taking a photo and uploading them onto Tapestry. We cannot wait to see them!

Reasoning time!

Today, we used our excellent reasoning skills to explain which clock shows the correct time. We soon realised that we could reason away the wrong answer, as well as explain how to find the correct answer.

We also practised using our fingers to count on in fives and explained how this can help us with telling the time.

Phase One Maths

This week is our last full week of school! So we need to fit in a lot of learning this week.

Reception are going to be broadening their knowledge of numbers beyond 20 up to 50. They will be counting carefully, looking at counting up in their tens and understanding one more and one less than a given number. I wonder if you can fill in the missing numbers?

Year One pupils are looking at multiplication and divisions and understanding that sharing and grouping means that each group has the same amount.

Mrs Cook’s Maths Group

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Today we are going to look at challenging you with some measuring questions! Read through the questions with your grown ups and then talk about how you can work out the answer. You do not have to tell me if you have answered them all but maybe you could take photos of your work and upload it onto Tapestry – I love to see what you are able to do at home!

Group 3 penguins and polar bears maths follow up – Wednesday 30.6.21

Today we have been discussing mulitplication strategies. You are learning about the relationship between addition and multiplication.

Thinking about your knowledge of working systematically and logically have a go a this work. (White Rose)

How will you work this out? Show your workings out!

Show your workings out – maybe you could use an array to prove it?
