Phase One Maths

Reception are continuing to look at shape and repeating patterns this week, concentrating on their language and understanding the properties of shape. This week’s Big Picture is from the nursery rhyme Mary Mary Quite Contrary.

Year One pupils are looking at the numbers beyond 50 up to 100 and understanding the counting in 10’s when looking at larger quantities. They will be looking at the number bonds of 100 and comparing large quantities discussing which is the largest/smallest number.

Can you work out who has the most bricks? How many bricks and logs does each pig have?

Maths in Phase One

Reception this week are looking at shape and pattern. They will be understanding the properties of both 2D and 3D shapes and studying repeating patterns. They will be the language used to describe the shapes using the key words: edges, straight, curved, vertices, flat, surface.

Year One pupils are looking at numbers beyond 50 and in particular counting and understanding groups of ten objects and how easier it is to count in 10’s when looking at larger quantities.

Phase One Maths

Year One pupils are continuing their understanding of coins and notes and this week we are focusing on addition and subtraction with money in everyday terms. We have been pretending to buy cakes and biscuits from the role play, working out the totals, finding the correct money or deciding if we need change.

Reception pupils are continuing this week to work on their doubling and halving. They are using manipulatives to help them work out halves and doubles with their partners, making sure they are using their careful counting skills and talking in full sentences.

When we are talking in our full sentences, we are concentrating on using the correct terminology. “Double one is two and half of two is one”

Phase One Maths

This week, Year One’s are starting to think about measurement and learning to use the key words of:

longer longest shorter shortest taller tallest

Year One pupils are understanding that measuring can be done with non-standard objects such as hands, cubes, paper clips. They are then exploring how to use a ruler and a metre rule and when it is best to use each one.

Have a look at the link below at the game to work out what is shortest an tallest! https://www.topmarks.co.uk/early-years/lets-compare

Reception are working on their careful counting focussing on their numbers up to 20, recognising the numerals and placing them in correct order.

Maths 23.2.21

Group 2

We have been learning about applying our knowledge of number bonds to addition and subtraction. This is a good opportunity for a bit of revsion of your number bonds to warm up your brains.

Next I would like you to try applying that knowldge to some ALWAYS SOMETIMES NEVER statments. You can find the activity here. Or you access the PDF if you are able to print a document.

https://nrich.maths.org/12671 Start with the number statements. Then, because you are now shape experts, try the shape statements too.

GROUP 3 and GROUP 4

You have been learning about perimeter so you have an investigation to do!

Firstly – what is perimeter? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvmxsbk/articles/zsr4k7h

Secondly, you will need squared paper, a sharp pencil and a ruler to draw acurately and neatly.

How many different rectangles can you draw with a perimeter of 20cm?

(hint – it is more than 4!)

Send photos to your teacher please!

Year 1 Maths with Mrs Cook

Happy Monday everyone – I hope you all had a relaxing half term?

Below is the clip for today’s lesson – we are looking at comparisons and using subtraction and addition to work out the difference of two groups. There will be an assignment for today which will arrive in today’s learning pack – make sure you look out for it, complete and upload to Teams or Tapestry!

Why not have a go at playing the game below – you can choose between the four different options – just choose either subtraction or addition!
