Problem Solving

Today in Group 3, some children completed a carousel of word problems involving 3 digit numbers. The children worked really well as a team and felt a sense of achievement when I let them know that they had answered all the questions correctly.

Home Learning – Wednesday 18th October
This Wednesday afternoon we would like you to complete some of the following tasks.
When you complete a task from the list below, you should upload it to your portfolio on your dojo account or you can bring in anything completed on paper into school tomorrow.

Reading:
Can I remind parents and children that we expect three signatures a week from parents in your child’s reading record to show that children have read at home either to a parent, a sibling or independently. Also, we have our reading café this morning where you can come and join your child to listen to them read and listen to our class reader.

Spelling:
Your child will come home with a spelling sheet. It will have one of the year 5/6 statutory words and will encourage children to think about the word in lots of different ways.

Maths:
Y6:

Please use TTRS to practice your times tables: https://www.ttrockstars.com/login
You can also use arithmequiz 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 to practice a variety of arithmetic style questions to improve your fluency.

Science:
This week we have been learning about the digestive system. Create a leaflet explaining to Eastgate phase how their digestive system works (as they are year 1 and 2 you may need to use diagrams and explain tricky words)

Internet Safety – Online Relationships
The children have been thinking about creating their own app which could create a positive online community – please discuss this at home.

D.T. – Diet, Nutrition and Hygiene.
This week we have learned about where food comes from and the seasonality of different crops. Research a crop and explore how it gets from farm to fork (from growing in another country to your plate at home).

Value – Generosity
It’s almost time for harvest where we donate and give food to those less fortunate than us. Don’t forget to bring in a food donation for harvest. You could write about the importance of harvest and how you feel when you donate food to others.
Also, don’t forget to practise our harvest song and research how different countries celebrate harvest. https://youtu.be/K5uhNJJ0y8A

Shapes in Maths for learning Group 1

This week we have started looking at 2D and 3D shapes. We started by comparing, identifying and sorting them based upon their properties.

We sorted them based upon the criteria of ‘do they have curves or straight sides?’ then ‘are they straight sides or not straight sides?’ We worked within small groups to discuss and share out ideas.

‘This has four straight sides that are all the same, it is a square and goes in the straight side group.’ IJ

‘I have a circle, the sides are not straight as they go around and around.’ RD

We then went on a hunt around school and looked for 3D shapes, we all found finding cylinders tricky – we have decided to keep looking for them when outside of school or at home. Can you find any together? If so, take a photo and send in via class Dojo.

We then began comparing the shapes to each other and making sure we tested them by predicting and trialling out which shapes would be the best for making the tallest towers. Children decided in pairs, which shapes would be suitable and why, using their reasoning skills to convince me which shapes they would need and why. ‘I do not want round or curve shapes, I need flat shapes so they can balance.’ AB ‘I do not want a curved shape as it will roll away.’ ARL

We then learnt the 3D shapes song, which we really enjoyed and could be heard singing it in the playground! See if you can sing along and remember the shape names and keep looking out for 2D and 3D shapes, they can be found everywhere.

Year 6 Maths

This week year 6 have been problem solving using addition and subtraction. Today we looked at using the inverse for those tricky “I’m thinking of a number….” problems. You did a great job today year six, so keep up the good work!

In our maths meeting, we have continued to practise the method of “keep change flip” to divide fractions by integers.

Maths Group 2

This week in maths we are learning about bar models and how we can use them to solve addition and subtraction equations. Today, we explored using cubes on a bar model to represent the numbers and find out how many altogether.

We used some number problems, such as:
First I have 5 apples, then I buy 4 more. How many apples to I have altogether? We places 5 cubes on the bar model and then placed 4 more. To finish we counted all of the cubes to find our answer.

Well done everyone, what a great start! We will be moving on to creating our own bar models and solving difficult problems.

Create a poster or leaflet which advises children on what they can do to try to make sure that they avoid as much harmful online behaviour as possible.

D.T. – Diet, Nutrition and Hygiene.
This week we have looked at calories and how much exercise we need to do in order to burn the same energy. Look at some different foods in your house, how many calories are there per 100g? Can you find the food item with the highest and lowest calories in your home?

Tous les nombres jusqu’à 100

In today’s French lesson, Year 4 have been using their knowledge of counting in tens to work out how to compose all the numbers to 100.

They practised working out these numbers by challenging each other in pairs.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is untitled.png

They were able to work out how to write any number between zero and one hundred in French, which needed quite a lot of mathematical brain power as well as language ability. Amazing work Year 4!
