Greater than or Smaller than

Today, Group 3 compared numbers by identifying which number is greater or smaller than the other. The children knew they had to look at the tens before looking at the ones. We then ordered numbers and placed them into a comparative sentence. They were able to use the concept of ‘the crocodile eats the larger number because he is hungry’. This enabled them to remember where to place the larger number.

This Wednesday afternoon we would like you to complete some of the following tasks.

If you complete a task, you should upload it to your portfolio on your dojo account or you can bring in anything completed on paper into school tomorrow.

Can I remind parents and children that we expect three signatures a week from parents in your child’s reading record to show that children have read at home either to a parent, a sibling or independently.

Your child will come home with a spelling sheet. It will have one of the year 5/6 statutory words and will encourage children to think about the word in lots of different ways.

Maths:
Y6 – Consolidate your knowledge of integers and decimals using the Oak National Academy lessons: https://classroom.thenational.academy/units/integers-decimals-fc14 or use Bitesize for some extra revision: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zsjqtfr/articles/zsbd7p3

Y5 – Consolidate your knowledge of large numbers https://classroom.thenational.academy/units/reasoning-with-large-whole-numbers-2bf7

Multiplication Marvels

Year 5 and 6 began the Multiplication Marvels challenge this week.

Multiplication Marvels is a 2 minutes times table challenge where children are given 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88 or 99 questions to complete in 2 minutes. They start at 11 and when they have achieved full marks twice they move up to the next level. Each level is associated with a marvel character: 11 is Black Widow and 22 is Spiderman for example. The children enjoy challenging themselves and the excitement of getting to the next superhero! Use TTRS to help practise your times table, the studio part of TTRS is great for increasing your speed!

SATs Mocks

This week year 6 had a taste of what SATs will be like. They had a go at the Maths, Reading and SPaG papers to experience the timings, rules and question they might come across. The children worked really hard and showed resilience when staying quiet for a long period of time! Keep up the good work year 6!

Internet Safety – Online Relationships
This term Westgate Phase are learning about relationships online. This week we have been exploring respect for others as well as self-respect online. Create a DO’S/DON’TS list for supporting friends online – e.g. DO listen to their feelings, DON’T make it worse by being mean to whoever upset them.

D.T. – Diet, Nutrition and Hygiene.
This week in D.T. we have learnt about the eat-well plate and balanced diets. Think about the meals you have had so far this week. Can you identify which food groups each food is in? What carbohydrates, proteins, fibres and fats have you eaten this week so far? Make a list of the foods you have eaten and put them into the different food groups.

Geography – Natural Resources
This week we have been learning about where natural resources occur in the world and what this means for that country’s economic growth, Saudi Arabia and oil for example. A lot of the resources we learnt about were from South America and the Middle East. Research what natural resources come from countries in Europe.

Science – Animals, including Humans.
This week we are learning about body parts and how humans have evolved over time. Imagine we are in the year 4023… Will humans be taller? Will our hands be bigger or smaller? Why? Think about how technology is advancing and draw a picture of what humans might be like in 2000 years time.

Maths

In today’s maths lesson children thought about ‘known facts’ and how these facts are really useful when making mental calculations. They were then given a number and asked to write down all the things they know about it. They were encouraged to use mathematical language and to use different representations to show each fact. Group 3 showed they know lots of things about lots of different numbers. Well done Group 3!
