Maths fun

Today in Maths we completed our pre-learning task on place value. The children worked really hard so once they finished we decided to play some fun place value games! Everyone tried very hard to win and worked together really well once they were out to try and catch out others. What an amazing end to the week! Well done Group 4.

Maths in Year 1

This week we have been settling back into our new learning groups. Group 1 (Year 1) pupils shall focus on numbers within 10 and how we can recall our number facts to add, subtract, subitise, and partition numbers into whole and parts.

Here are some examples of the questions we looked at this week. Perhaps you can look at these together at home, can you both find 5 socks? Can you set up a mini cinema when you watch a film and make tickets, how many people will be watching, how many tickets will you need to make? Teddies may join you for the film, don’t forget they will need tickets also. How many people are there altogether? What if one person left, many many would there be then?

Can you child say in a sentence …. There are _______ ships altogether?

Can you find which fruits are apples? How many apples can you see? How many pears can you see?

The children found this every tricky – just by looking at the image, can they answer how many cubes they can see? This is called subitising, we will be continuing with this skill next week.

Remember, if you complete any additional home learning, take a photo and upload it onto Class Dojo, where we can share and celebrate it with all of our friends here in Year One.

Jigsaw

After today’s move up morning and the secondary transition days at your new schools last week, how are you feeling about your new school year? New teachers? New class mates or tutor groups? Write down how you are feeling today about new beginnings and what you are looking forward to. If you are feeling nervous or anxious, think about the different techniques we have learned in school. These could be breathing techniques, talking to someone, listening to music, going for a walk or doing some exercise, just to name a few. Try some of the calming techniques for your home learning.

Wednesday Home Learning – 05/07/23

Home Learning – Wednesday 5th July 2023

This Wednesday afternoon we would like you to complete some of the following tasks.

If you complete a task, you should upload it to your portfolio on your dojo account or you can bring in anything completed on paper into school tomorrow.

Reading:

Can I remind parents and children that we expect three signatures a week from parents in your child’s reading record to show that children have read at home either to a parent, a sibling or independently. You can still add your read for good books to track my read using the website below:

Literacy:

Create two characters, one from a modern society and one from the past or future. You should make sure your characters are very different so that when they meet through a portal they seem alien to one another. Think about what they would say to each other. How would they introduce themselves, what interesting fact would they share and how would they feel? Draw the characters and describe them using adjectives. Then, create the dialogue these characters would have between each other. Don’t forget your inverted commas and correct punctuation. Remember to use interesting speech words (not just said)!

Art:

Research artist Emma Howell (who is actually from Gloucester). I have shared some of her art on this post to inspire you.

Can you create a colouring or painting like Emma? You could use materials or technology to create the artwork too. Be creative!

Maths:

Jigsaw

It’s almost time for us to move on to new schools (year 6) and new classes (year 5). Look back at the year you have had and think about the following questions:

What are you most proud of from this year?
What have you learnt that has helped you this year?
What are you looking forward to next year?
What do you want to achieve next year?

You could present this as a drawing or just answer the questions in sentences.

Science

Light… where does it come from? When was electricity invented and who invented the lightbulb? Research into electricity and the lightbulb. You could create a poster, leaflet or fact file about electricity or the lightbulb.

Wednesday Home Learning – 28.06

Home Learning – Wednesday 28th June 2023

This Wednesday afternoon we would like you to complete some of the following tasks.

If you complete a task, you should upload it to your portfolio on your dojo account or you can bring in anything completed on paper into school tomorrow.

Reading:

Can I remind parents and children that we expect three signatures a week from parents in your child’s reading record to show that children have read at home either to a parent, a sibling or independently.

Literacy:

This week we have started exploring portal narratives. Portal narratives often start with someone doing their usual routine or something that seems ‘normal.’ They then get sucked into a portal which takes them to another dimension, time in history or into the future. If you could choose a portal to go through, where would you end up? What would it be like? Draw a picture and annotate using adjectives to describe where you would go if you could go through a portal.

Computing:

Using stop-start animation, create an animation of a character of your choice going through a portal into a new dimension. You could draw your characters and settings or use any toys or figures you already have at home.

Maths:

Please use TTRS to practice your times tables: https://www.ttrockstars.com/login

You can also use arithmequiz 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 to practice a variety of arithmetic style questions to improve your fluency.

https://www.candomaths.org/arithmequiz3.html

Jigsaw

We have been looking at self-esteem in Jigsaw and how we see ourselves. Your task this week is to write 5 things you like about yourself. Then, ask someone in your family to write 5 things they like about you. You can then write 5 things you like about someone in your family or someone at school. Make sure you share these with me.

Science

Over the last few weeks we have been exploring different properties of materials, magnetism, floating and sinking and many other properties. Experiment with different objects in your house (please ask an adult before you choose your objects), thinking about the following things:

What is the mass of the object?
Does it float or sink?
Is it magnetic?
How does the object feel?
What does it look like?
Does it absorb water?

Don’t’ forget to show me your work on Dojo or bring it into school!

Home Learning – Wednesday 21st June 2023

This Wednesday afternoon we would like you to complete some of the following tasks.

If you complete a task, you should upload it to your portfolio on your dojo account or you can bring in anything completed on paper into school tomorrow.

Reading:

Can I remind parents and children that we expect three signatures a week from parents in your child’s reading record to show that children have read at home either to a parent, a sibling or independently.

On Monday 12th June we launched ‘Read for Good’ on Track My Read. We will be aiming to read 1,000,000 minutes as a school before the end of term. The link below will take you to the login page. Please have a go at adding a book you have read to the Track My Read once you have your login and password: https://trackmyread.org/school/st-pauls-cofe-primary-school-912126

Literacy:

This week we will be completing our formal letters and will begin looking at Tanka poems. A tanka poem is an ancient Japanese form of poetry that is categorised by the number of syllables in each line, totaling 31 syllables. These poems traditionally are about seasons, nature, desires, or feelings, and often include many different types of literary devices, such as personification, metaphors, and similes. Tankas typically present a whole story or picture within the 31 syllables.

We would like you to learn the Tanka below ready for a class poetry slam.

A pool of sunlight

Bathes the stormy evening bay.

A lonely heron

Stands still, a cunning statue,

Waiting for unwary fish.

You could also have a go at writing your own Tanka poem. Or you could rewrite this poem and add images to reflect what the poem is about.

Computing:

This week we would like the children to think about how the things they access on the internet can support but also hinder their well-being and mental health. We often search symptoms of illnesses or concerns online, but how do we know the advice we read is accurate. With this in mind we would like the children to create a piece where they will give advice to other children in their age group around accessing information online to aid health and well-being. Create a mind map, poster or leaflet which should include top tips of how you can use the internet to access trusted sites to support you and include how talking to a professional is advised.

Create a film or animation: The film can be animation or live action. Create a ‘do’s/don’ts’ information film. The films should include top tips of how you can use the internet to access trusted sites to support you and include how talking to a professional is advised.

Something else: Encourage learners to think of other ways to convey information e.g. infographics, memes, audio recordings like songs or radio adverts, displaying tips through gaming content like a Minecraft world or Roblox game! Creativity is key!
