Dividing Fractions

Today year 6 have been looking at how to divide fractions. We have followed the strategy keep, change, flip.

Step 1: keep the first fraction the same.

Step 2: change the division to multiplication.

Step 3: flip the final fraction so the denominator becomes the numerator and the numerator becomes the denominator.

Step 4: multiply the numerators to get the numerator and the denominators to get the denominators.

Have a look at our workings…

January to December

LO: To be able to order the months of the year.

Star words

Month      year       date        after   before          birthday January     February        March       April

May   June   July   August September   October      November       December

Can you say the months of the year starting from March?

It doesn’t matter which month we start on as they just carry on!

Why not ask me if I can say the months of the year in order?

Seconds become minutes

LO: To be able to understand that time can be measured in minutes and seconds.

Star words

Second       minute       hour        clock   longer        shorter    Minute hand  second hand

Did you know a minute has 60 seconds in it?

Today we had 20 seconds to time our friend doing different activities. We had to count how many times they did the following things: Star jumps, write our name, write number to 10, catch a ball. This was great fun after a few false starts. It always pays to listen!

After, we had to guess how long a minute was it was a disaster! Some of us put our hands down after 30 seconds while others went over 2 minutes! Something we can be working on!

Classifying Characteristics

In order to complete their science today, Phase 3 needed to use a kindle to present a Venn diagram relating to classification of animals! Two problems: One, what was a Venn diagram and two, how could they do this?

Once pupils had all looked at a Venn diagram, they soon realised it is the same as the ones they’d seen before in maths. Problem two was a little more tricky. They managed to use docs (or files for some) to create a presentation which was almost like working in Power Point. With a little bit more practice, they should get to grips with the insert features and pen.

Multiplication Marvels

Phase three have started using multiplication marvels every Thursday to our times tables at speed. The children have two minutes to answer times tables questions. They start with 11 questions and once they have two lots of full marks they can move into the next level, 22. They can progress each week and move up to 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88 and 99. The children have enjoyed challenging themselves. If they want to practise their times tables they can use TTRS to practise. The studio area of TTRS is really helpful when practising speed.

Algebra

This week year 6 have been introduced to algebra. They have explored how to exchange numbers for letters and solve equations using algebraic letters. They have also started to apply algebra to worded problems. This hasn’t been easy. However, the children worked hard and all tried their best.
