Converting Measures

This week Year 6 have been exploring coverting measures.

There is a lot of information we need to remember when converting measures.

We created a revision poster to help us remember the key measures.

Mass:

1000g = 1kg

Capacity

10ml = 1cl

100cl = 1l

1000ml = 1l

Distance

10mm = 1cm

100cm = 1m

1000m = 1km

We also worked out that there must be 1,000,000mm in 1km!

Keep up the good work Year 6!

What’s the Angle?

Year 5 finished off their unit on angles by measuring, drawing and calculating angles on a straight line and at a point. They reasoned that if you know one angle on a straight line, you can calculate the other using the known fact that angles on a straight line sum to 180°.

Group 4 Maths

LO: To find fractions of quantities

LO: To begin to explore equivalent fractions

Today we were amazing Mathematicians! We used the vocabulary denominator, numerator and equal groups to explore what equivalent meant. We explored that equivalent means equal, the same and used bar models to represent equivalent fractions. We were able to explain our working using words, pictures and some of us, numbers too!

We explored the size of fractions too, we were intrigued to find out that actually the larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction! We used bar models to explore this, but also looked at a birthday cake, we would rather have 1/2 than 1/12!

Wednesday 18th January – Home Learning

Home Learning – Wednesday 18th January 2023

This Wednesday afternoon we would like you to complete some of the following tasks.

If you complete a task, you can upload it to your portfolio on your dojo account or you can bring in anything completed on paper into school tomorrow.

Reading:

Can I remind parents and children that we expect three signatures a week from parents in your child’s reading record to show that children have read at home either to a parent, a sibling or independently.

Literacy:

Persuasive Writing

This week we have been exploring persuasive writing and in particular a persuasive speech. Click the link below to learn about ways you can make your writing really persuasive:

Your task this afternoon is to create a poster or a leaflet explaining how to write using persuasive techniques.

If you want some extra learning on persuasive writing, use the Oak National Academy link below:

Use Oak National Academy to help with your fractions too: https://classroom.thenational.academy/units/fractions-ed51

Year 6: Practise reading scales, once you are happy with level one you can explorwe the higher levels!

Please use TTRS to practice your times tables: https://www.ttrockstars.com/login

You can also use arithmequiz 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 to practice a variety of arithmetic style questions to improve your fluency.

Music:

Your child will come home with a charanga/YUMU login. This is where we can assign music homework. This week year 5 and year 6 will explore rhythm, tempo and pulse. Once you log into Charanga you will find an assignment which is called ‘Rhythm Grids.’ This is where children can explore tempo and rhythm and practice clapping different rhythms. For home learning, your child should familiarise themselves with these rhythm grids as we will use them a lot over this unit of music.

In addition to charanga, you can follow the link below which will take you to a bitesize lesson on pulse and rhythm:

Any child who completes any of the suggested home learning activities above, will receive DoJo points!

Thank you for your cooperation,

Miss Taylor and Mrs Goode

3D shapes and nets

Today year 6 have learnt about 3D shapes. They have explored the features of three dimensional shapes like faces, vertices, edges and apex. We have looked at prisms and pyramids and understood how to tell the difference. We learnt that when you make nets from 3D shapes the faces are two dimension shapes. The children were challenged to explore patterns on a cube. Each child made a cube to help with their learning.

Reflection

This week year 6 have been learning about the four quadrants and how to plot coordinates accurately.

We have also explored how to translate and reflect shapes along the x and y axis or a line of symmetry. We used mirrors to help us visualise what the reflection would look like and to check that we have accurately reflected the shape.
