Adding and Subtracting decimals

Today in maths, Year 4 worked on adding and subtracting decimals. We started the lesson by adding and subtracting decimals that were less then one. The children mastered this quickly so we then moved onto adding and subtracting decimals greater than one. The children found this trickier so we used dienes to help us represent the problems we were answering. This helped us to see the problem and helped us to see the answer develop as we moved around the dienes. Great work Year 4.

Group 1 Maths

In maths this week, we have been looking at numbers 50-100. The children have had great fun using Dienes to find large numbers and to count in 10s. Why don’t you try counting in 10s at home? It’s so much fun and we’re experts at it!

3D Shapes

This week Year 6 have been exploring 3D shapes and their properties. The children started by recapping the names of 3D shapes and explaining the difference between a prism and a pyramid. The children then looked at the different 3D shapes and created their own SATs style questions to ask the rest of the class before moving onto nets.

The children completed the following NRICH task involving nets of 3D shapes: Cut Nets (maths.org)

Trust
This term our value is trust. What is trust? How do you gain someone’s trust? What happens if someone breaks their trust? How can we forgive someone who may break our trust? You can discuss these questions with an adult at home, create a poster, leaflet or advert about the importance of trust and being trustworthy.

Managing Information Online
Discuss the following questions with an adult or older sibling at home:

  • How does a search engine work?
  • What rules does a search engine use, to decide what results come to the top of the list?
  • Are you in control of what information and content you see online?
  • What information about you is used to determine your search results?

Comptez avec moi!

This week in French, Year 3 have been revising numbers 1 to 10 as well as learning numbers 11 to 31. They discussed the importance of being able to count to 31 and how this is useful for telling someone the date any day of any month.

After playing lots of games – counting on and Bingo – to practise these new numbers, some pupils were very excited to be able to use their new knowledge to try to count backwards in French.

Quelle heure est-il ?

Year 4 have been putting their knowledge of French numbers to use this week by learning to tell the time for o’clock and half past times. They learned the words for hour (heure) and half past (et demie) in order to be able to answer the question ‘Quelle heure est-il?’ – What time is it?

Test them out on these times before checking the answers in the final image.

Here are the answers.

Comparing decimals

Today in Year 4 we looked at comparing decimals. The children looked at different strategies that we can use to notice whether a decimal is greater or less than another decimal. We used dienes to help us represent these strategies and also looked at using number lines to count in tenths. The children then used dienes to help them represent a range of problems. Well done year 4!
