Active Angles

Last week saw the whole of Phase 3, start their learning all about angles – we did it in an active way, with Mrs MacPherson leading the way: the activities had us all on a ‘Mission Impossible.’ Searching for clues, we developed our understanding of angles, making angles with our bodies and cones – taking instructions from our mission cards.

Fun was had by all and now we all know the names of the key angles – Do you?

Complete the words below to show the main names of angles:

  • St_______________
  • Re_______x
  • Ri_______ angle
  • Ob__________
  • Full Rev__________

Maths in Phase One

Reception pupils are working on their careful counting up to 20, ordering the numerals in the correct order and recognising the quantities. They are then looking at one more and one less up to 20. This week’s big picture is from Little Boy Blue – I wonder if you can talk in your full sentences about what you can see in the picture?

Year One’s are continuing to look at measurement and this week we are focussing on weight using the correct key words:

heavier lighter heaviest lightest balancing equal

I wonder if you can look around your home for objects and talk with your grown ups about them being heavier or lighter.

Have a go with the link below to compare the sizes of the objects!

Phase One Maths

This week, Year One’s are starting to think about measurement and learning to use the key words of:

longer longest shorter shortest taller tallest

Year One pupils are understanding that measuring can be done with non-standard objects such as hands, cubes, paper clips. They are then exploring how to use a ruler and a metre rule and when it is best to use each one.

Have a look at the link below at the game to work out what is shortest an tallest! https://www.topmarks.co.uk/early-years/lets-compare

Reception are working on their careful counting focussing on their numbers up to 20, recognising the numerals and placing them in correct order.

Practical Maths In Action – Volume

Today, Phase 3 tested their practical maths skills, measuring the volume of given 3-D shapes. They estimated the measurements first and then set about measuring the three-dimensions of the shapes, with their tape measures – calculating lengths and volume accordingly: with great success! Everyone, felt more confident by the end of the lesson. Well done everyone!

During the remainder of this week, we will explore the topic further, applying new knowledge to more calculations (even compound 3-D shapes and prism) and solving problems too – using our ever improving reasoning skills.

Volume, Volume, Volume

Today, Phase 3 set about developing their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volume, in their maths lesson. During their ‘active’ maths lesson, outside, the pupils set about defining what volume is, building blocks of volume and exploring displacement – as a way of measuring the volume of irregular objects.

The reasoning, debate and discussion, between all the pupils and within the teams, was fantastic and everyone involved clearly deepened their understanding. Well done all!

Do you know what displacement is? Today Mr. Flower demonstrated this with water, but we also explored the possibility of displacing air (gasses), by moving objects through it.

Do you remember what we said 1ml of water was equivalent to?
