Westgate practised writing (along with some maths!) in French this week using the vocabulary from the last lesson to write the cost of something and the calculated change from a given amount.
They then used phrases and words from throughout the unit to orally recap how to go shopping, have a polite conversation with the shopkeeper, find out the cost of a product and buy it.

Today in Maths, we were learning how to reflect a shape using the mirror line. As we didn’t have any mirrors or tracing paper to help us, we discussed how we could use the squares on the grid to count how far each vertex was from the mirror line.
After this, as a group, we described the translations that had taken place once the shape had been reflected. The pupils were able to use the language like “the vertex has been translated 5 steps right” to describe the translation.

Home Learning – Wednesday 28th February 2024
This Wednesday afternoon we would like you to complete some of the following tasks.
When you complete a task from the list below, you should upload it to your portfolio on your dojo account or you can bring in anything completed on paper into school tomorrow.
Reading:
Can I remind parents and children that we expect three signatures a week from parents in your child’s reading record to show that children have read at home either to a parent, a sibling or independently.
Book Review
If you have read a good book recently and you’d like to recommend it to others, write a book review which we can share with the rest of Westgate.
Maths:
To support your child’s learning please use the following links. Year 6 will be starting Ratio and Proportion on Friday after a week of SATs papers. Follow the link to explore ratio: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zsq7hyc
Year 5 are learning about coordinates, including translation and reflection: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgthvcw
Please use TTRS to practice your times tables: https://www.ttrockstars.com/login
World Book Day Competition 21/02/24 – 05/03/24
Every child will be given a paper plate to create their favourite book character on. You should endeavour to use resources you have at home, which may be different materials, paints or crayons/colours etc. This competition will start today and the deadline is Tuesday 5th March, to allow us time to judge the winner and display them in the hall on World Book Day (Thursday 7th March). Prizes are on offer, one per phase, and will be presented in the assembly on WBD. Also, ahead of World Book Day we are asking children to take photos of themselves “wild reading” (reading in strange places!). These photos will be displayed alongside the paper plate characters in our school hall. So please send your photos to us on Class DoJo.
Internet Safety – Health and Wellbeing
As part of our internet safety lessons this term, we are exploring health and wellbeing when being online. As part of your home learning, you should write a diary of when you use technology this evening. You should log the device you are on, how long you are on it for and what you are doing on the device for that time. You could even ask a family member to do the same. Maybe even Miss Taylor and Miss Southam will have a go too!
Music
The children have spent the last 7 weeks learning the clarinet. Please join us next week for our Clarinet Performances in our school hall.
Year 5: Monday 4th March at 11am
Year 6: Tuesday 5th March at 11am
Thank you for your cooperation,
Miss Taylor and Miss Southam
In Maths this week we have been finding the difference between two numbers. The children have been using words like ‘fewer’, ‘more than’ and ‘difference’. They have been using this new vocabulary beautifully. Well done Group 1!

In Maths, Year 5 have started learning about Transformations. We learnt that the 4 types of transformation are translation, reflection, rotation and dilation. This week we will be focusing on translations. The children know that movements between positions of a given number to the left/right/up/down are called translations. The children had a go at describing the translations between two points on a grid, using their vocabulary to help them.

Today in maths Group 4 started their new unit on time. Today we focused on telling the time with o’clock and half past. The children did really well and gave excellent descriptions of the the purpose of the minute and hour hand. We also started to challenge ourselves by looking at quarter past and quarter to but we will continue to look at this in more detail next lesson. Well done Group 4!

Westgate worked really hard in French today, using their language and maths brains to solve French money problems.
Having been introduced to the French monetary system, they went ‘shopping’ and worked out which coins and notes they could use to buy different items using the exact money. Next week, they will be able to calculate the change due from a large note.
