Dividing by 10

Today, the children in Group 3 focused on dividing by 10 using a range of methods and manipulatives. The children identified that a number will become smaller when dividing by 10 and therefore numbers move into the column to the right on the place value chart. With the choice of exploring which method worked for them, the children were able to be successful with their learning.

Introduction to fractions

Today in Group 4 we started our new topic of fractions. We discussed what fractions were as well as looking at the different components that make a fraction. We discussed what the dominator, numerator and vinculum are and how we can we can find the denominator and numerator in pictorial representations.

Group 4 then spent some time matching together different pictorial representations that equated to the same number to show their understanding. This prompted some great discussions.

Tick tock…

This week children in Eastgate have been looking at clocks and reading the time. Group 2 have explored quarter to and quarter past.

Here we are practising “o’clock” and “half past”

We have been learning a new skill of reading the time as “quarter past” and “quarter to”. Some of us have found it a little tricky to remember where the big hand goes, but we will carry on practising next week to be sure 🙂

Division with partitioning

On Wednesday Group 4 continued their learning on division with partitioning. During our first lesson we had struggled to understand how to do this correctly, however, during Wednesday’s lesson we worked together to go through each step and break the problems down. We did multiple questions as a group before trying independently. Group 4 showed great perseverance skills to keep going!

Properties of materials is our new unit of work in Westgate Phase. Create a table of different materials around your home. What is made of plastic? What do you have which is made from wood or metal? Why are these objects made from these materials? What are their properties that makes them good for their uses?
