Maths Group 2

This week we are continuing our learning about multiplication and division and using arrays to display the information. Today we discussed how multiplication is commutative and that it is the inverse of division. We arranged cubes and used these sentences to explain our learning:

Home Learning Wednesday 29th November

Thank you for all of your continued support during our Time to Talk Meetings, it has been a pleasure to see so many of you this week.

Following on from general feedback, this week children will be bringing home a couple of home learning sheets, as lots of you requested some Maths, hand writing and or Literacy/ phonics work.

Today, we are sending home a variety of learning for the children to complete.

Year One pupils will have some alien words today, which can remain at home in order to practice daily for 5 minutes, to support with their phonic word decoding skills.

Year Two pupils will have some maths challenges to complete and return to school – but of course anyone within Eastgate can complete this if they would like to.

All children to complete the handwriting worksheets and return to school.

Please remember that Wednesday afternoons are for children and careers to complete home learning tasks along with reading their reading books – Reading Books are changed Mondays and Thursdays each week.

Thank you for your continued support, happy home learning!

Home Learning – Wednesday 29th November
This Wednesday afternoon we would like you to complete some of the following tasks.
When you complete a task from the list below, you should upload it to your portfolio on your dojo account or you can bring in anything completed on paper into school tomorrow.

Reading:
Can I remind parents and children that we expect three signatures a week from parents in your child’s reading record to show that children have read at home either to a parent, a sibling or independently.

Handwriting:
Please complete the handwriting sheet you will be given today.

Spelling:
Your child will come home with a spelling sheet. It will have one of the key stage two statutory words and will encourage children to think about the word in lots of different ways. If you aren’t sure how to complete this, please ask.

Maths:
Complete the times table colouring sheet to reveal the hidden picture.

French
Practise describing people, places, things and actions orally and in writing.

National Tree Week
This week is National Tree week, create a poster or a leaflet about different trees and how they are important to our environment and survival.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Miss Taylor and Miss Southam

Maths – Learning Group 1

Today we have been learning how to use the ‘Make ten’ strategy to add two 1-digit numbers.  We have worked hard to use our number bonds facts and complete challenges using our skills and knowledge as well as proving our answers to our friends.

We have been asking each other ‘How do you know?’   ‘Can you prove it?’   ‘Can you show me how you do it?’

Here we are using our make ten strategy using cubes and objects as well as recording them via equations in our workbooks and on whiteboards.

7 times tables

Today in maths, Group 4 explored multiplication facts in the 7 times table. We discussed as a class different ways that we can represent these facts to help us when doing mental calculations. The children matched different representations of 7 times tables together and talked about the different ways in which we can remember our times tables. We then had a go at creating our own representations of the 7 times tables in our book.

BIDMAS

This week, year 6 have been learning about the order of operations and which operations have priority and also equal priority.

The children have learnt how to use and apply the acronym ‘BIDMAS.’

Brackets
Indicies
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

Group 2 Maths

This week in maths we have been exploring arrays. Arrays display information about multiplication and division. The children have worked really hard this week exploring, reading and even creating their own. On Thursday the children were given a dilemma:
If we have 24 children in the class, how many different ways can we arrange the children in carpet seats?
The children needed to decide how many rows they wanted and if they could fill these rows of equal amounts. Every row in an array needs to have the same amount in – equal groups.

The children discovered lots of different ways, including:
4 x 6 – 4 rows of 6
6 x 4 – 6 rows of 4
3 x 8 – 3 rows of 8
8 x 3 – 8 rows of 3
2 x 12 – 2 rows of 12
12 x 2 – 12 rows of 2
1 x 24 – 1 row of 24 (we’d need a wide classroom for that!)

Today we solved another problem with 12 children. If they were put into 6 rows, how many children in each? If they were put into 3 rows, how many children in each?

Learning Group 1 – Addition and Subtraction

What super mathematicians we are within Year One as we have been working hard to apply out number bond and number facts to add and subtract a 1 digit number to teen numbers.

We have been using playing cards in pairs to turn them over, spotting who has the greatest or smallest value then using them to create equations using the symbols for subtract or plus. ‘I have 9 and she has 3, 9 is the greatest, so we can do 9 – 3 =’ VS Children were completing the answers also.

As well as using playing cards they have used cubes to notice patterns within our number bonds learning, along with finding them helpful to explain our whole and part strategies.

Next, we created number stories again using our maths vocabulary of – subtract, plus, equals to, value, increase, decrease and represent.

We looked at the similarities between 1 and 2 digit numbers helping us to understand place value.

What super learning – here we are writing up our playing card equations which we have written independently.

Feeling proud of our learning.

Times Tables

In year 2, we are beginning to learn the times tables. Why not have a go at counting in 2s, 10s and 5s. Once they can do this, the children can begin to say the times tables too, eg. 1×2=2 2×2=4. Can the children see any patterns in the numbers? Counting in twos starting on 0 will always be an even number. Counting in tens from 10 will always end in a 0 and counting in fives the answer will always end in 5 or 0.
