ROMAN SCALES

Last week, saw the whole phase continue to develop their historical knowledge, as they worked as art historians.

Above you can see pictures of the pupils, replicating images of Roman soldiers, whilst studying the armour and clothes that they wore when they invaded Britain in AD43. The pupils also had to think and work mathematically, as they were asked scale up the image.

The pupils started their impressions by folding a smaller image, into equal parts. They then folded a larger piece of plain paper in same way – This enabled the duplication at a larger scale, within each corresponding folded section: measuring key points and lengths (using a ruler) and then multiplying by three to achieve a scale of 1:3.

WHAT COULD YOU TRY DRAWING TO A LARGER OR SMALLER SCALE?

Maths this week

This week during our maths lessons, Phase One will be exploring all the ways in which we can measure.

We shall be looking at how we can measure the length of something, including estimating when comparing against another object. Try comparing when at home together; which is the tallest out of the table or the chair? Guess how many spoons you may need, to see how long your teddy is? We will be looking capacities and weights, using weighing scales to see if they will balance if objects are the same or different.

Again, you can try this home, guess which will be heavier out of a tin of beans and an apple? Which is lighter when looking at a toothbrush and the toothpaste?

Upload your pictures onto Tapestry so can see what you can have found and how you have been measuring at home.

Here are some pictures below, see if you can use the language of ’empty, full, nearly full, or nearly empty’ when describing each image.

Which picture appears empty or full?
How would you describe each image?

Lastly, why not find out how long you are? Lie on the floor and see if you are 8 shoes long or possibly 10 forks long, maybe you are more or less than 8? Do you have a grown-up that is longer than 10 books in length? Make sure to capture this by taking a photo and uploading them onto Tapestry. We cannot wait to see them!

BATTLE SHIELD DANCE

The beginning of this week saw Phase 3 pupils take to the field – the battle field – for a duel between each other and the houses: Water house took the spoils in the end, but it was a close battle!

Last week, the classes learnt how to draw Celtic knots (click here), a symbol of unity and love – these were something that the Celts, from the period before Christ and the Roman invasion of Britain, decorated their battle shields with. This week, the pupils took their designs and added them to shields, measuring up their braces (the handle of the shield) to fit their hand – before entering into a battle with a difference.

The battle itself was a silent and non-contact one, with pupils performing a dance: changing levels and speed to add drama without noise – silence is, after all, a menacing thing. The faces pulled were enough to fill their opponents with fear.

Fab job everyone.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IN HISTORY RELATES TO THE CELTS?

Target – Times Tables!

This week we focused our maths learning on securing our knowledge of the multiplication tables to 12 x 12. We talked about the importance of this knowledge for all aspects of maths and, how being able to recall this knowledge instantly will support us in becoming excellent mathematicians.

We used several strategies to help us: Using a multiplication grid; playing Times Tables Rockstars and Hit The Button, and discussing multiples and factors in our Maths Meetings.

Here we are hard at work (and play).

LET’S LEARN CONTINUOUSLY

This week has also seen Phase 3 very busy engaging in their continuous provision activities – These are learning activities that the pupils engage in independently, choosing what to learn/do at each station. The stations are dotted around the classrooms and school, and offer pupils the chance to explore different curriculum subjects: Can you work out the subject areas on offer here?

This week has seen pupils involved in piano play, Hit The Button, jigsaw building, building with blocks, taking a bike ride and writing prayers – to name a few.

The pupils prayer, which was added to the class prayer book, can be seen below.
