New Battle – Times Table Rockstars. Summer Term, week 4: Time to start playing again!

Who will win this week?

There is a NEW Times Table Rock Stars battle – running from today, until 5pm on Sunday the 16th of May – Who will win? You decide! Get playing now!

Playing numbers have fallen away since our return to school, so don’t forget to get playing – The winning house will get some extra ‘Active’ time, next week. Could you help your house win the points.

Plotting a Reason

Earlier this week, the whole of Phase 3 set about exploring a series of mathematical images, with no knowledge of the focus. As the lesson progressed, more and more maths language was revealed, as each new image was provided – eventually the focus became clearer: coordinates. Along the way, though, much reasoning was undertaken – What was it that they could see in each new image? What did they know already?

They could see a lot and knew a great deal, however, as always the chance was taken to deal with misconceptions and secure a logical understanding of coordinates. Finally, we agreed a key list of language from their discussion about the images. You can see this below, along with a phrase we all secured in our minds – Can you see it?

Group 2 Maths (reasoning time!)

Today we had a look at using thermometers – we explored how we measure temperature and realised that a thermometer is just the same as a ruler – the higher the red liquid, the higher the temperature. We explored a few reasoning questions about different temperatures, some of us even looked at the scale on the thermometer – this was a little tricky!

Check out our reasoning below…

Maths in Phase One

This week both Reception and Year One are focusing on addition and subtraction.

Reception will be using cubes to work out the total of two groups of objects. They will be talking in their full sentences to explain the number problem and looking at the number sentences.

Year One’s will be working with two digit and one digit numbers when adding and subtracting. They will be working out the patterns in number problems, such as:

24 + 5 = 29

29 – 5 = 24

Missing Angles – FIND THEM!

Last week, saw pupils in Phase 3, set about finding missing angles. Reasoning was once again at the heart of the matter – talking themselves through each step and drawing on what they already knew about the properties of shapes, as well as their existing knowledge of angles. Take a look at the images below and the video, where some pupils explain how they found one such missing angle.

WELL DONE EVERYONE!

Group 2 Maths

Today we started comparing m and cm. We recapped our learning from last lesson and used the terms greater, less and equal to, and used these signs too <, > and =. We really showed our understanding on our whiteboard work so Miss Morrison challenged us to measure in cm!

We chose different objects and measured them accurately, we were able to discuss the difference between mm, cm and m too! We soon realised that when we measure we have to start at the 0cm, not the end of the ruler!

Expert Angle Drawing

Yesterday saw the whole of Phase 3 developing their understanding of how to draw angles – some of the pupils, across the learning groups, became ‘experts’ and taught their peers ‘how to.’ This was a joy to watch – pupils helping others to achieve: explaining and reasoning was the order of the day once more. Thanks to their peers, the progress made was brilliant and clear to see.

Could you draw an angle using a protractor?

Could you draw an acute, obtuse and even a reflex angle? If you’re not sure then ask one of the pupils in Phase 3 to show you how.

Phase One Maths

Year One pupils are continuing their understanding of coins and notes and this week we are focusing on addition and subtraction with money in everyday terms. We have been pretending to buy cakes and biscuits from the role play, working out the totals, finding the correct money or deciding if we need change.

Reception pupils are continuing this week to work on their doubling and halving. They are using manipulatives to help them work out halves and doubles with their partners, making sure they are using their careful counting skills and talking in full sentences.

When we are talking in our full sentences, we are concentrating on using the correct terminology. “Double one is two and half of two is one”

Group 2 Maths

Today we split our lesson into two parts – we first thought about measuring length. We decided that we needed a standard measurement of length to measure accurately. We looked at metre sticks and estimated (a clever guess) to show how long or short objects around the classroom were. We estimated longer, shorter or the same length as 1m – we then moved to 2m.

We went on a metre hunt around school, estimating and measuring objects to see if they were longer, shorter or the same length as 1m. We used the language short, shorter, shortest, long, longer and longest – we also talked about the suffix on each word!

We also spent time with Miss Morrison reviewing and recapping addition and subtraction with exchanging. We learnt from our mistakes and consolidated tens and ones knowledge.
